Regarding the receiver, microwave photonics links with high gain (i.e low losses RF‐to‐RF), low NF and large SFDR drives the need for PhotoDetectors that respond efficiently and linearly to RF‐modulated light, as well as photodetectors that handle large optical power.

Currently, for space applications, a cascade of a photodiode followed by an RF amplifier is used. In OPTIMA, DAS will develop a photo‐receiver module integrating the PD and the amplification chain in the same package, reducing the footprint by at least a 50%. The receiver should provide flat response within the targeted bandwidth with strong rejection of out-of-band frequencies for reducing non-linearities.
